Yes, absolutely. In order to best serve you and your pets needs we ask that you call to schedule an appointment.
WHAT IF I AM UNABLE TO BRING MY ANIMAL DURING REGULAR HOSPITAL HOURS?
If your schedule does not coincide with ours, in some cases we may ask that you schedule a drop off appointment for your pet off in the morning. One of our veterinarians will examine your pet during the day. We will discuss our physical exam findings and any associated diagnostics and/or treatments with you over the phone and arrange a time for you to pick up your pet.
WHAT IF MY PET HAS AN EMERGENCY?
Huntington Animal Hospital is a member of the Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic. The Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic is equipped to handle all out of hours pet emergencies.
WHY DOES MY ANIMAL NEED AN EXAM TO RECEIVE A PRESCRIPTION?
We prescribe and dispense prescription drugs licensed by the Canadian Food and Drug Administration and Canadian Food Inspection Agency. We are regulated by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario to ensure the safe administration of all medications. It is unlawful to prescribe medications to a pet without an up to date record of health. We require an exam to assess the health status of all pets prior to prescribing a medication.
WHY DOES MY PET NEED AN EXAM TO BE PRESCRIBED FLEA/TICK AND HEARTWORM MEDICATION?
Flea/Tick and heartworm preventive medications are considered prescription medications, and therefore require an up to date health record to prescribe these medications.
WILL MY PET SEE THE SAME DOCTOR AT EACH VISIT?
If you prefer to see a specific doctor, please let us know! We do our best to schedule you and your pet with the same doctor you have previously seen. If your doctor is not available we will be sure to let you know.
WHAT WILL IT COST TO TREAT MY PET?
Huntington Animal Hospital follows the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association fee guide. Please contact us for costs associated with routine care, such as vaccinations. For medications, treatments, diagnostics and surgery, our veterinarians can provide you with an estimate.
MY PET IS HAVING SURGERY. HOW DO WE PREPARE?
The day prior to your pet’s scheduled surgery you will receive a phone call from one of our care team members. At this time they will go over all recommendations to prepare for surgery. We ask that all animals receiving anesthesia or sedation be fasted for 12 hours prior to arriving at the clinic. That means, we ask that you do not allow your pet to eat after 7pm the night prior to surgery and that you do not allow them to consume water after 6am the day of surgery. If you have any questions regarding your pet’s surgery or how to prepare, please do not hesitate to contact us.
WHY DOES MY PET HAVE TO WEAR AN E-COLLAR (CONE)? ARE THERE OTHER OPTIONS?
Your pet has been prescribed an e-collar to prevent licking, scratching or rubbing. If your pet is allowed to lick, rub or scratch a surgical incision, wound or infection, they are at risk of delayed healing or infection. To ensure that your animal heals without complications, they have been prescribed and e-collar. This collar should be worn by your pet at all times when unsupervised. Alternatively, we do offer medical pet shirts and soft e-collars that can be purchased. In some cases, they can be used in lieu of a hard plastic e-collar to prevent licking, scratching, and rubbing.
